From the get go I was getting some suspicious looks. Turns out that my favourite pair of blue vans was a bad choice for the Peace concert I was at, I obviously didn’t get the text that I was to wear a pair of vintage Doc Martins and an ironic Christmas jumper. Still got some ‘mad props’ for the Bart Simpson shirt I was wearing but anyway this doesn’t matter.
The first support act were the band Superfood. The four-piece looked almost glad to be at Shepherds Bush apart from their female bass player, I’m not sure what was up with her but she just played miserably for their seven or so songs. Then my mind was turned into absolute mush by the new grunge kids on the block Drenge. Their set was an attack on the senses, the smell of sweat, taste of beer thrown over me, feel and sight of violent moshing and of course the unadulterated ferocity of the Loveless brothers’ debut album.
Finally it was time for the main act, Peace. Once they stepped on stage the crowd went insane for Harrison Koisser and co. Each of them dressed like the proverbial hipster kings they are known to be. After starting with the soaring Higher Than The Sun the Worcester band didn’t hit the ground till the end. A personal highlight was a stripped back version of California Daze by the turtlenecked lead singer.
A Peace gig would not be a Peace gig if they were not any bizarre shenanigans. After for some heckles for a Christmas carol, to my surprise I began to witness a rendition of Last Christmas by WHAM. It was kind of ironic, a song about lost love by such a loving band.
